The Neurology department at Burhani Hospital is fully equipped and staffed to diagnose and treat all spectrums of Neurological Diseases. This includes all acute conditions, such as Stroke, Meningitis, Epileptic attacks, severe Muscle or Nerve weakness, chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Dementia, Headaches, Neck aches, Backaches, Dizziness, Numbness, Fatigue, Neuromuscular weakness and other disorders etc. A team of highly qualified Neurologists, Residents, Medical Officers, Therapists and Nurses are available and fully dedicated to the mission of the department. “To provide comprehensive, compassionate and cost-effective Neurological Care for all citizens”
Services
The Neurology Department is offering following services:
1:- Clinical Neurophysiology Services:
Equipped with latest technology and well-trained technologists, the Clinical Neuro-physiology laboratory performs essentially all relevant tests. The equipment is state of the art and technologists are trained and supervised by certified Neurologists. Following tests are now performed. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins are accepted as well.
- Electroencephalography (EEG).
- Electromyography (EMG).
- Nerve Conduction Study (NCS).
- Video EEG Monitoring (24 Hours).
- Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP).
- Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP).
- Trans-cranial Doppler (TCD).
EEG (Electroencephalogram):
This test measures electrical activity of the brain (just like ECG is for heart). It is a safe and painless procedure for patients with possible Epilepsy or spells of fainting, confusion, drowsiness, headaches, vertigo, coma and another neurological dysfunction. For epilepsy and sleep disorder in additional services provides sleep derived EEG and for admitted patient’s portable EEG is also provided
EMG/NCS (Electromyogram / Nerve conduction studies):
This test measures electrical activity of nerves and muscles. Very useful tests that may help identify a nerve or muscle disease/injury. This test consists of two parts (i) NCS or Nerve Conduction Study checks the functioning of nerves performed by well-trained technologists and (ii) Needle examination that is done by the Neurologist. Patients with pain, weakness, numbness may need this test.
EPs (Evoked Potentials):
(VEP, BAEP, SSEP)
Another safe and painless test that provides useful information about Nerves of Eye (Visual Evoked Potential), Ear (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials) as well as Nerves / Spinal cord (Somatosensory Evoked Potentials) and their connections with the brain.
TCD (Trans-cranial Doppler):
TCD measures blood flow of the brain using ultrasound. Tests are very useful in identifying those individuals who may be at risk for stroke. Since it is an ultrasound it is painless as well as safe.
EEG Video Monitoring:
All / any types of fits can be recorded on the video and at the same time EEG recording is done. This is the way to confirm seizures or pseudo seizures. It also helps localize a seizure focus.
2- Neuro Rehabilitation Unit:
Physical therapy is already well established at Burhani Hospital. We run physical therapy and have a team of trained staff. The Department of Neurology offers services viz., Occupational Therapy and Speech Language Therapy.
Speech Language Therapy:
Speech Therapists help to rehabilitate adults and children with communication, language, speech and swallowing disorders. Adults may acquire neurological damage due to (stroke, head injury) or voice problems. Children may present with difficulties in acquiring language normally (possibly as a result of cognitive deficits, cerebral palsy, hearing loss or autism) or have reading and writing difficulties (dyslexia).
Occupational Therapy:
Patients with Strokes, Head Injury, Parkinson’s disease, Cerebral palsy and other neurological and Orthopedic problems are helpful in reaching their maximum potential. The aim of Occupational Therapy is to assist patient in achieving independence in activities of daily living.
Out Patient Department :
Conveniently located and easily accessible (patients can be dropped off at the entrance of the clinic) stretchers and wheel chairs are always available. Neurology clinics are held every day (except Sunday).
- Morning clinics (12 pm – 2 Pm),
- Afternoon clinics (3 pm – 5 pm),
- Night Clinics (8pm – 9pm),
are on first come first served basis.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
Board meetings attended by Neurologists, Neuro-surgeon and other specialists to discuss interesting as well as challenging and undiagnosed cases. This helps in getting multiple opinions at one time as well as consensus on optimum management of patients.
The daily ward rounds, clinical discussions create an academic environment which further helps in the better services of the patients.
