Skin is the largest organ of body and accounts of 4% of total body weight. It continually regenerates itself throughout life, through the process become slower as we grow older. Skin generates a general state of a person's health. A sensible well-planned lifestyle helps to keep skin healthy. The most obvious function of the skin is to provide a protective physical barrier between the body and the environment. The skin is involved in the regulation of the body temperature. The skin also plays an important role in vitamin D synthesis. The skin is the major important in our body image and in fact skin disease cause psychosocial problem. In addition, skin disease not only because stress and depression but physiological stress from another cause exacerbate, or even be involved in causation of, some skin disease. Many environmental and occupational factors also frequently cause skin problem in some individuals which might be followed by the development of eczema that can spread other part of the body. Excessive exposure to sun radiation harms the skin and cause premature aging and can also exacerbate certain skin disease like SLE. Maintaining hygiene is of utmost importance in preventing skin infections. In adolescence the skin produces more grease than all other times mostly on the face and upper trunk. In young people secretion of sebum leads to blockage of sebaceous glands that causes acne which is a very common problem at teen age. Due to Sun exposure sometimes melasma occurs.
Contrary to the common belief, many skin disorders are not contagious. However, there are certain skin disorders like infections and treatment ensures complete recovery. People ignorant of this fact socially isolate these patients. Some skin diseases have a prolonged course and needs regular treatment and follow-up. There are few skins conditioned that are life threatening; they need emergency care and hospital admission. It is usual practice to try home remedies for skin diseases which at times can lead to worsening of the condition of a dermatologist in case of a skin disorder. A dermatologist will take relevant history and do examination then give advice how to treat as well as how to prevent it. In some instances laboratory tests are instrumentals and sometimes you need a support from microbiology lab for fungal scrapings especially for microscopy .Certain skin diseases require skin biopsy for
confirming the diagnosis.
